A robot vacuum has to navigate the home you actually have, including thresholds, chairs and everyday objects. Sketch the rooms and the route between them before choosing around a feature list.

This guide focuses on selecting the right type and setup for your own routine. It is not a ranking of products or a claim that a particular brand has been tested.

Check the physical obstacles

Measure relevant furniture gaps and thresholds, then compare them with the manufacturer’s documented limits. Note surfaces or areas excluded by the instructions. Do not assume a robot will manage an obstacle simply because another model or a demonstration video appears to do so.

Plan a workable dock position

Read the space and access requirements for the specific dock, including room for maintenance. Consider outlets, opening containers and removing any parts you must clean. An automated dock can be larger or need different handling than a simple charging base, so compare the whole system.

Understand preparation and maintenance

Read what the maker expects you to remove from the floor and how often components need attention. Check app, account and connection requirements before buying. Automation does not eliminate the need to deal with unsuitable objects or follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and maintenance instructions.

Before you order

  • Measure thresholds and low furniture.
  • Check the dock’s full operating space.
  • Read preparation, app and maintenance requirements.

Use the listing for the exact model, size or variant you intend to buy. If a necessary detail is missing, ask the retailer or manufacturer before paying. Check the final basket total and current delivery and return terms for that selection.

Making the choice

Choose a robot only if its documented limits fit your floor plan and routines. If preparation would be more work than you want, a different cleaning approach may serve the household better.
