A Sofa-Shopping Checklist for Smaller Homes
Measure delivery access and seating needs before comparing styles.

A sofa is a large purchase in both money and room space. Start with who will use it, how the room is arranged and how the furniture will get inside. The best-looking option is not useful if it cannot reach its destination.
This guide focuses on selecting the right type and setup for your own routine. It is not a ranking of products or a claim that a particular brand has been tested.
Check the delivery route
Measure doors, stairs, lifts and tight turns along the proposed route. Compare these with the retailer’s packaged and assembled dimensions, and ask about the actual delivery method. Removable parts or flat-pack construction should be confirmed in the listing rather than assumed from a photograph.

Compare usable seating
Look at seat depth, width and back shape alongside the overall dimensions. Arms can occupy a meaningful part of a compact sofa’s footprint. Think about how you usually sit and who shares it, and evaluate comfort personally where possible under the seller’s actual viewing or return arrangements.
Understand upkeep and service
Read upholstery care, assembly instructions and any described component or cover arrangements. Check delivery charges and how the seller handles a problem on arrival. If removing your existing sofa is part of the plan, coordinate that timing instead of assuming a delivery service includes disposal.
Before you order
- Measure every tight point on the delivery route.
- Compare seat space with total width.
- Read care, delivery and return conditions.
Use the listing for the exact model, size or variant you intend to buy. If a necessary detail is missing, ask the retailer or manufacturer before paying. Check the final basket total and current delivery and return terms for that selection.

Making the choice
Choose a sofa that fits the way you use the room and the route into it. Avoid paying for a larger seating count if the result would make daily movement or the remaining furniture arrangement uncomfortable.
